Arguements on A New Performance Evaluation Policy

A new performance evaluation policy for the university staff is a hot topic recently. Open discussions gave rise to various interesting comments on it. I quoted some of them in the following.

"People at different stages in their careers will contribute differently. Also, MOST people are “outstanding” in only EITHER research OR teaching. Of course, the management will say that some people are “outstanding” in both—but how many?? Are we ONLY going to reward these FEW supermen and superwomen, and PUNISH the vast majority who do well in one or both but are NOT “outstanding”?"

"Staffs with different ranks should be rated differently. It is difficult to understand why a chair professor and an assistant professor are evaluated with the same set of criteria and even with the same standard. If we have the same expectations on a chair professor and an assistant professor, then why we pay much higher salary to a chair professor than an assistant professor! "

"Many staff will be endangered not because of their idleness but unfair allocation of resources. They want to work hard but do not have sufficient resources to do so. Staff working in the university identified areas such as nano-engineering, material engineering, antenna, electronic engineering, etc have more research students than those working in humanity, social sciences, etc. It's well known that many CSE staffs have more than 10 ongoing PhD students. How can staff working in College of Business and CHSS compete with them? How can they have resources to accomplish comparable performance? The allocation of PhDs has never been queried as the whole exercise is in a black box and does not allow any external review and comment, though seemingly it's fair and open. The allocation of research student places to different areas was determined few years ago without any appropriate and sufficient consultation. It's the outcome of a cake split. This is a totally absurd exercise! It only shows the weaknesses of greed and desire in our management.
"

"It is not just about PBPR, but the overall drifting of vision and mission of the university (who wants to be top 100? This is not a privately owned university but one for everyone, it is not about whether the goal is realistic or not, it is about whether it is a common goal or not), the lack of care about students and staff (senior management cares nothing about students and their staff at all…all the recent management actions have highly demoralized faculty and staff members and harmed the well-being of students), the bureaucratic management (everything here is top-down and unreasonable), the quality of leadership/management (the leadership is not there, we deserve a better president and management), the unfairness of the performance measurement system (when do we become a commodity and priced according to the market?) I am indeed disappointed and regretful about being a faculty member in this university. Should I have a choice, I would never have joined this terrible place. This is no longer a university, but a jungle full of wild cannibals."Don't tell anyone

Boast of Quietness

Writings of light assault the darkness, more prodigious than meteors.

The tall unknowable city takes over the countryside.
Sure of my life and death, I observe the ambitious and would like to understand them.
Their day is greedy as a lariat in the air.
Their night is a rest from the rage within steel, quick to attack.
They speak of humanity.
My humanity is in feeling we are all voices of that same poverty.
They speak of homeland.
My homeland is the rhythm of a guitar, a few portraits, an old sword, the willow grove’s visible prayer as evening falls.
Time is living me.
More silent than my shadow, I pass through the loftily covetous multitude.
They are indispensable, singular, worthy of tomorrow.
My name is someone and anyone.
I walk slowly, like one who comes from so far away he doesn’t expect to arrive.

Bossa Nova
